Couches & Sofas Buyer's Guide

Seven Devils 2 piece Silver Screen Sofa Set

Sofas come in numerous types, materials and sizes. Ranging from sectionals, sleeper sofas, futons, love seats, and the standard couch. A sofa will occupy a large section of your living room, and choosing the right one might be a bit of an ordeal. However, we have plenty of information on our site to simplify your sofa shopping and help guide you through whatever questions you may have.

Sofa Materials

Sofa frames are generally made out of metal or wood. Metal is most common in sofas that might have moving parts, such as recliner sofas or futons. Metal is a solid sturdy option that lends itself well to most sofa roles. Wood sofas can also be solid and practical, as well as beautiful. Although, if you are investing in a wood sofa it is important that you invest in the right type of wood. High quality woods such as Oak will last under stress much longer than materials such as particleboard or plastic.

Heights Sofa

Leather sofas are most commonly regular or reclining sofas. Leather is always a great look it offers durability, style and comfort. But, if you choose a leather sofa you will want to be sure it is properly taken care of.

  •  • Your leather will need to be cleaned regularly with a commercial leather-cleaning product. Follow the instructions on the bottle to insure the best results.
  •  • Spills need to be handled immediately to prevent any permanent staining or color loss.
  •  • Leather sofas should not be put in direct sunlight. The leather has a tendency to bleach, dry, or crack.
  •  • A few times per year you should use a leather conditioner to keep your sofa looking and feeling new.

Upholstery Fabrics: Other fabrics tend to offer a wider range of selection than leather can. Fabrics can come in a number of different styles and patterns.

If you opt to go with a non-leather fabric, there are other things to consider. If your sofa is going to suffer wear from friends, pets, and kids you may want to choose a cleanable fabric that is tightly woven in order to avoid stains and snags. A fabric like micro-fiber or olefin is a solid durable option in such case, though olefin may fade a bit in direct sunlight.

Sofa Types

  • Regular Sofas: Regular sofas come in various sizes and usually fit 3-4 adults. They fit comfortably in most living rooms.
  • Futon Frame with Kingston Arms
  • Sleeper Sofas: Sleeper sofas usually take up about the same amount of space, folded up, as a normal sofa would. But, sleeper sofas, or sofa beds, contain a bed which folds out of the frame in order to create a cozy guest bedroom where there wasn’t one before. Usually the bed is large enough to comfortably support two adults.
  • Sectionals: Sectional sofas can usually hold a ton of people. Depending on the shape they may wrap around corners to enhance or define a gathering area, and they can separate to allow for a change in design.
  • Loveseats: Loveseats are smaller sofas that usually comfortably sit two; they may fit more easily into a smaller room.
  • Futons: Futons serve the same function as a sofa bed, but do so in a simpler manner. With a futon the mattress often doubles as the cushion and just needs to be unfolded to transform the couch into a bed.

Sofa Sizes, etc.

There are a few other things you should consider before you buy your sofa. If you are looking to make your couch look formal, or if you just want to sweep things underneath it, you may want to consider a sofa with a skirt. If your sofa has armrests make sure they are the proper height and will work out for all your needs (if you sit on the arms be sure you are getting a couch with sturdy, wide arms). Determine if your sofa has loose or tied cushions, loose cushions can be flipped to restore comfort or hide stains. Making sure your sofa fits in its intended space is also a concern. But, as well as looking into that, you may want to know the seat depth, the size of the arms, what the feet look like, the cushion height, etc. Our site should be able to help you with most all of these questions.

Take the time to pick a sofa that will satisfy all your needs and make a statement in your living room.
